Permanent - Hydraulic Cylinder Draughtsman - Ekurhuleni (East Rand) - South Africa

Job Purpose

• The Hydraulic Cylinder Draughtsman is responsible for designing, detailing, and producing accurate engineering drawings for hydraulic cylinders and associated components.
• The role supports manufacturing, repairs, upgrades, and reverse engineering activities by providing technical drawings, bills of materials, and design documentation that comply with customer requirements, engineering standards, and company quality procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Drafting 

• Produce detailed manufacturing drawings for hydraulic cylinders and components using CAD software. 
• Generate assembly, sub-assembly, and component drawings. 
• Design new hydraulic cylinders according to customer specifications and operational requirements. 
• Modify existing designs to improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability. 
• Create and maintain 2D and 3D models of hydraulic cylinders and related equipment. 
• Ensure all drawings comply with applicable engineering standards and tolerances.

Reverse Engineering 

• Measure and inspect existing hydraulic cylinders and components.  Create accurate drawings from sample parts where original drawings are unavailable. 
• Identify critical dimensions, materials, and tolerances required for manufacturing. 
• Develop replacement component drawings for obsolete equipment.

Technical Documentation 

• Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) for manufacturing. 
• Compile engineering documentation and technical data packs. 
• Maintain revision control of drawings and technical records. 
• Ensure all documentation is stored and updated according to company procedures.

Manufacturing Support 

• Provide technical assistance to workshop personnel during manufacturing and assembly. 
• Clarify drawings and specifications for fitters, machinists, and supervisors. 
• Participate in root cause investigations related to design or manufacturing issues. 
• Assist with resolving technical queries from production teams.

Quality and Compliance 

• Ensure designs meet customer specifications and performance requirements. 
• Support quality inspections by providing accurate technical information. 
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives. 
• Ensure compliance with applicable safety, quality, and engineering standards.

Customer and Supplier Support 

• Assist in technical discussions with customers regarding cylinder designs and repairs. 
• Review customer drawings and specifications. 
• Communicate with suppliers regarding materials and component requirements when required. 
• Provide technical input for quotations and project planning.

Minimum Requirements Education 

• National Diploma or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Draughting, or equivalent qualification. 
• CAD certification will be advantageous.

Experience 

• Minimum 3-5 years experience in mechanical draughting. 
• Experience in hydraulic cylinder design, repair, or manufacturing preferred. 
• Experience in reverse engineering and component measurement. 
• Exposure to machining and manufacturing processes.
