Position Purpose
- The Hydraulic Cylinder Inspector is responsible for the detailed inspection, assessment, documentation, and quality verification of hydraulic cylinders and components throughout the repair process.
- The Inspector ensures that all customer units, service exchange units, and repaired cylinders meet company SA quality standards, customer specifications, and safety requirements before progressing through the workshop or being released to the customer.
- The role serves as a critical link between production, quality control, customer expectations, and workshop planning by providing accurate technical assessments that drive quotations, repair decisions, and final acceptance
Key Responsibilities
Incoming Inspection and Assessment
- Receive and inspect hydraulic cylinders upon arrival.
- Identify and document visible damage, wear, and failure causes.
- Assess components where required.
- Measure critical dimensions and tolerances.
- Determine repairability of rods, barrels, pistons, glands, and associated components.
- Identify replacement parts required for repair.
- Capture photographs and supporting evidence for quotations and customer reports.
- Ensure all inspection findings are accurately recorded on job cards and inspection reports.
Failure Analysis and Technical Reporting
- Determine probable causes of component failures.
- Identify abnormal wear patterns and recurring failures.
- Provide detailed inspection findings to management and quotation teams.
- Assist in recommending repair or replacement options.
- Assist with root cause investigations for warranty returns and customer complaints.
- Maintain accurate records of inspection findings and recommendations.
Quality Control During Repair Process
- Verify components meet repair specifications before assembly.
- Conduct in-process inspections throughout the repair cycle.
- Confirm machined, welded, and manufactured components meet required standards.
- Reject non-conforming components and initiate corrective action.
- Ensure workshop procedures and quality standards are consistently followed.
- Monitor compliance with customer repair specifications.
Final Inspection and Job Release
- Perform final quality inspections before pressure testing.
- Ensure correct seal kits, wear rings, bearings, and fasteners have been installed.
- Confirm all repair procedures have been completed.
- Ensure documentation is complete before job closure.
- Authorize cylinders for testing or customer release once quality requirements are met.
Final Release Checks
- Component quality verification.
- Assembly accuracy.
- Dimensional compliance.
- Documentation completeness.
- Testing readiness.
- Compliance with customer specifications.
Service Exchange Unit Management
- Inspect all incoming service exchange units.
- Assess condition and determine refurbishment requirements.
- Ensure exchange units are inspected and approved before returning to stock.
- Maintain quality standards of exchange inventory.
- Report stock shortages, damaged units, and repair requirements.
- Assist in keeping service exchange units ready for customer demand.
- Support management in resolving technical queries and concerns.
Job Planning and Production Support
- Prioritize inspections according to workshop workload and customer urgency.
- Provide timely inspection reports to prevent delays in quotations and repairs.
- Communicate repair scope changes to Foremen and Workshop Managers.
- Assist production planning by identifying long-lead components and repair requirements.
- Provide technical input during production meetings
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete inspection reports accurately and professionally.
- Ensure job cards are updated with relevant findings.
- Maintain photographic records where required.
- Assist with quality trend analysis and reporting.
- Record non-conformances and corrective actions.
- Ensure traceability of inspections and decisions
Safety and Housekeeping
- Comply with all company Health and Safety requirements.
- Wear prescribed PPE at all times.
- Maintain a clean and organized inspection area.
- Report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Promote a safe and quality-focused workshop culture.
