Cattle Farmer / Livestock Manager – Job Specification

  • Manage daily operations for a herd of 800 cattle.
  • Operate feeding systems and monitor animal nutrition requirements.
  • Oversee livestock health, welfare, and farm standards.
  • Perform basic veterinary tasks including vaccinations and routine treatments.
  • Assist with breeding programs and herd development.
  • Maintain livestock records, movement logs, and medication reports.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and animal welfare guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience working with large cattle herds (preferably 500+ head).
  • Practical experience in livestock management, feeding systems, and herd health.
  • Knowledge of breeding cycles, calving, weaning, and general herd development.
  • Experience administering vaccinations, medications, and basic veterinary treatments.
  • Previous farm or ranch experience required; livestock certifications are an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to monitor cattle health, detect illnesses early, and take corrective action.
  • Skilled in operating feeding machinery, cattle handling equipment, and farm vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain accurate herd records, treatment logs, and movement registers.
  • Understanding of nutrition programs, grazing patterns, and feed rationing.
  • Knowledge of livestock welfare standards and farm safety procedures.

Physical & Operational Requirements

  • Ability to work long hours and handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Comfortable working in outdoor, rural, or remote environments.
  • Able to respond to cattle emergencies, including after-hours when required.
  • Capable of working with cattle in pens, crushes, and open-field environments.

  • Strong animal welfare mindset and patience when handling livestock.
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Problem-solving skills, especially during calving, health issues, and herd movement.
